DJ Dumb American is Jason Goldberg. You may know him as the man behind the moog in his post-rock collaboration The Timeout Drawer, or the hustler at the helm of SomeOddPilot Records, or you may have blown him off on what would have been your second date together.

- - So why does he think he can spin if he's in a band, runs a label and can't get a date? And why is his moniker DJ Dumb American for god's sake?

Since this boy was a child, umm...nevermind. Ever since the early 80's, the desire to spin records was influenced by throwing down windmills and crabwalks in a black and red puma jacket and taping DJ shows off of WBMX 102.7. After a decade hiatus from the electronic beat oriented universe and into the abyss of metal, punk and hard-core, this kvetch was turned on to the likes of idm, techno, electro, drill'n'bass and meat substitutes like tofu and wheat gluten. Ever since, the unpermitted commandeering of stereos at parties and in strangers' cars could be considered a common occurence. So, it was time to get a pair...and a mixer. As far as the name is concerned, it's a simple and self-aware cop-out of an excuse for playing an equal part in turning our planet into a toilet. What this has to do with spinning records is up to you.

- - The newer and sometimes frowned upon practice of spinning CDs:

When our Dumb little DJ was 15, he trashed his parents' new house as a result of a heavy metal party gone terribly awry. In the heat of revenge, mom and pop busted up all of the poor human's vinyl which consisted of a deranged mixture from Afrikka Bambaataa and UTFO to Iron Maiden and Slayer. Ever since, DJ DA has concentrated on respecting other people's property and purchasing the new and improved format and major contributor to our economy - the compact disc. When it came down to exchanging money for goods and services, CD decks were making a resurgence on the market and if anything ever made sense to this kid in his life, buying CD decks was it. As far as traditional techniques and the vinyl format are concerned, don't knock the CD thing 'til you experience it. Although you may not look as cool as you would jockeying big shiny discs of vinyl, the same techniques apply, holding true to the art and tradition of spinning.

- - Style, techniques and haunts...or why Dumb American as opposed to anyone else and where would I get jiggy with him?

You'll seldom hear this common case of ADD spin anything too consistent. His theory lies in the ginchy juxtapositions of the genres themselves, creating a unique audio time-warp from the breakdance era to today's neatly packaged idm, electro, and so on. The end product is an historical to post-modern mesh of music on opposite ends of the timeline that share the same beats or have evolved as a result of rediscovery. Sets are usually tailored to the event, or a venue's vibe, and I just said three words with v's in them. You can see this perpetuator of unnecessary stresses perform frequently in Chicago at the Empty Bottle, sticking his head up at Danny's PLAY program, and at fellow bandmate Jason Terchin's parties.
